When to Use a Sign Test

Use a Sign Test when you have paired data (e.g. before and after).
The null hypothesis is that the two data sets (e.g. before and after) are the same.

Sign Test Example Using QI Macros Template

Imagine that you have 15 intersections where you record the number of accidents before and after the installation of a traffic control device.

Open the template by clicking on QI Macros > Stat Templates > Sign Test and then chose the "Sign Test" tab. Enter the data in columns A and B and QI Macros will calculate a p value for you.

Interpreting the Sign Test Results

Remember that the null hypothesis is that the values are the same.

In this example, you would reject the null hypothesis, because the p value of 0.046 is less than the default alpha value of 0.05. In other words, the traffic control device DID reduce accidents.
