Nursing Shortage and Quality Improvement

The U.S. has a shortage of 500,000 nurses. It also has a shortage of Quality Improvement experts. Here’s what to do about it.

“Hi, I’m Jay Arthur, author of “Lean Six Sigma For Hospitals” and QI Macros [software].

“My friend LeAnn Thiemann wrote the book “Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul,” and she has a whole platform which she’s been working on for a long time, because we’re short about a half a million nurses in the United States of America… a half a million. And I don’t know about you, but if you need one, it might be nice to have one.

“LeAnn’s been chasing this idea of ‘Each one reach one.’ Every working nurse should invite a former nurse back into the practice because a lot of them leave, right? They discover, you know, especially after COVID, “Oh my gosh, these are crazy times. I’m going to take a job that’s a little more sane or something.” All right, so ‘Each one reach one.’

“But I want you to get the same idea for Quality Improvement. If you’re good at Quality Improvement, who can you bring under your wing? Who’s going to be your Padawan learner (as they as they say in Star Wars)? Can you bring somebody on board? ‘Each one reach one.’

“Bring somebody new into the Quality Improvement game. They don’t have to go to training. You can coach them and get them going very quickly and easily. You can use my free online Yellow Belt training (www.lssyb.com) and all of the other stuff that’s out there to help them grow and learn this process, especially if they’re interested.

“So that’s my Improvement Insight for this week. Let’s go out and reach someone and invite them into the Quality Improvement business. Let’s go out and improve something this week.”
