QI Macros Technical Support

Most Common Support Questions for Excel 2010

NOTE: Some Office 2010 users who have upgraded to Windows 10 have reported glitches, e.g., unable to open exisiting Excel files.

QI Macros Menu does not Appear in Excel

This is because your Microsoft security settings has removed the Alternate Startup pathway in Excel, once closed:

Download, Enable and Click on button in this file: Add-QIMacros.xlsm

Manual way to restore QI Macros Addin:

  1. Open Excel and select File > Options > Advanced
  2. In the Advanced section, scroll down to the "General" portion, and in the "At startup, open all files in" textbox, input the following: C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\
  3. Press "OK," close Excel and reopen - you should now see the QI Macros menu in your Excel ribbon.

Common Problems & Questions

I upgraded to Excel 2010. Why can't I see the QI Macros on my menu?

When you install a new version of Excel, the QI Macros aren't automatically moved to the new startup folder.
You can reinstall from your backup CD or if you no longer have it, you will have to do this manually.

How to Move QI Macros Manually

1. Navigate to the c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\xlstart (Windows 7 & 8)
- Excel 2003 files are in Office11
- Excel 2007 files are in Office12
- Excel 2010 files are in Office14

2. Copy the files and folders shown below.

excel-2010-install-files

3. Navigate to the c:\ Program Files (x86)\ Microsoft Office\ Office14\ xlstart (Windows 7 and 8)

4. Paste the files and templates into Excel 2010's xlstart folder.

5. Restart Excel.

Warning: If your version of QI Macros is older than July 2010, you will need to upgrade the QI Macros. Older versions will not work with Office 2010.

No QI Macros menu appears

One of three things has happened:
  1. Excel disabled the QI Macros
  2. Excel was installed using Click to Run and additional manual steps are required to complete the installation.
  3. QIMacros.xlam did not get installed properly.
  1. Excel disabled the QI Macros
    To re-enable either the qimacros.xla, QIMacros2010menu.xlam, QIMacros2014menu.xlam, or qimacros.xlam files:
    • In Excel, click on File, Options and then on Add-Ins in the left-hand column.
    • Then Click on Manage Excel Add-Ins at the bottom of the screen and click on the arrow next to the box and select Disabled Items:
    • Then Click on the GO button next to your selection to see all disabled items:
      disabled Excel add-in
    • Click on each of the qi macros disabled items and click Enable.
    • Once you've enabled all of the QI Macros disabled items, exit Excel and start Excel 2010. The qimacros.xla file should open automatically.
  2. Excel was installed using Click to Run and additional manual steps are required to complete the installation.

Excel 2010 versions installed using Click-to-Run use a virtual file system which appears as a virtual Q drive. Unfortunately, you cannot access this drive and neither can the QI Macros. Therefore, the QI Macros need to be installed using an Alternate Startup Folder.

There are three steps to this process:

    1. Click on My Computer, the C drive and the QI Macros folder:

If you have an XLSTART folder open it. It should look like this:
    excel-2010-install-file-location
If you do not have an XLSTART folder, contact us at support@qimacros.com and we can send the folder and its contents to you. Let us know if you purchased the software or are using the 30-day trial.

    2. In Excel, click on File, Options and Advanced to open the window below. c:\program files\qimacros\xlstart - In mid-September 2017, we began using this folder for all installations in all versions of Windows and Excel 2007-2016. Scroll down to the General section and type the QI Macros location (c:\program files\qimacros\xlstart\)in the box labeled "At startup, open all files in:"

    Excel 2010 AltStartup

    3. Close Excel and reopen it. QI Macros should appear on your Excel toolbar.

If your Excel is running slow, you might want to consider re-installing Excel using the traditional method.
  3. QIMacros.xlam did not get loaded

Go to c:\program files\qimacros\xlstart (September 2017) or c:\ Program Files\ Microsoft Office\ Office14\ Xlstart and view the contents of the XLstart folder, it should look like this:

    excel-2010-install-file-location

If your XLStart folder contains some kind of temporary file, delete the temporary file and see if this solves the problem. If your folder is missing the .xla file, then close Excel and reinstall the QI Macros. If your XLStart folder contains the files, then Excel has disabled them. See step 1 above.

  4. Note: If the necessary install files are not located in any of the pathways listed above, see if they are perhaps found in the following pathway: c:\ Users\ AppData\ Local\ VirtualStore\ Program Files (x86)\ Microsoft Office\ Office14\ XLSTART

I Click on the Menu, but Nothing Happens

You may have disabled the addins.

Go to File-Options-Trust Center-Addins and uncheck the box shown:

Excel 2010 Addin Ribbon Doesn't Do Anything

Then exit Excel and start Excel to clear the problem.

Installation Instructions and Troubleshooting

Installation Instructions

  1. Close Excel.
  2. Double click on the QI Macros setup.exe file to run the installation wizard.
  3. Answer the prompts.
  4. Open Excel, you should see "QI Macros" on your menu bar.

qi-macros-excel-2010-menu

If the installation wizard ran correctly and you don't see QI Macros on your menu bar, Excel may have disabled the file. Its easy to re-enable the file.

  • In Excel, click on File, Options and then on Add-Ins in the left-hand column.
  • Then Click on Manage Excel Add ins at the bottom of the screen and click on the arrow next to the box and select Disabled Items:

  • Then Click on the GO button next to your selection to see all disabled items:

  • Click on each of the qi macros disabled items and click Enable.
  • Once you've enabled all of the QI Macros disabled items, exit Excel and start Excel 2010. The qimacros.xla file should open automatically.

If the necessary files are located in the proper location:

  • Check to see if Excel removed the "At startup, open all files in" pathway when Excel was closed. To do so, open Excel and select File > Options > Advanced.
  • In the Advanced portion of Excel, scroll down to "General" and look to see if C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\ is inputted in the "At startup, open all files in" section:

alt-startup-pathway

  • If this window is blank, input the startup pathway listed above, press OK, close Excel and reopen Excel - you should now see the QI Macros menu in your Excel ribbon.

Test data for the charts is located at C:\Program Files\QIMacros\test data. You can use these spreadsheets or your own data to practice with the charts.

Basically you just select your data, go up to the menu bar and select the chart you want to run. Templates like the FMEA, Gage RR and DOE can be accessed by choosing the Lean Six Sigma Templates from the pull down menu.

Where do I find the QI Macros files on my PC?

QI Macros is loaded in the XLStart folder at C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\ or at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Xlstart\. Your XLStart folder should contain the following files.

excel-2010-install-file-location

If you are having problems accessing the menu or templates and your XLStart folder contains some kind of temporary file, delete the temporary file and see if this solves the problem.

Running Windows 10 S?

Please note that QI Macros is not compatible with Windows 10 S. If you have this Operating System installed, and want to install QI Macros, you must upgrade to Windows 10 Pro: Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro

To Uninstall a QI Macros License or 30-Day Trial

QI Macros is an Excel add-in and not a separate application. Therefore it does not uninstall using Add/Remove programs. Instead follow the instructions below:

Run Uninstall File

Uninstall QI Macros Manually

Remove the qimacros.xla(m) and QIMacros2010menu.xlam files in:

Excel 2010 - C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\ or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office14\xlstart

Note: In Windows 7 with 32 bit versions of Excel (all versions except 2010) you will find the files in Program Files x86 vs Program Files

Uninstalling the 30-Day trial:

If you uninstall the 30-day trial, you will not be able to reinstall it again. If you need more time to evaluate the software, send an e-mail to support@qimacros.com and ask for an extension.

QI Macros still shows up under "Add /Remove Programs"

QI Macros has been uninstalled. If you want to remove it from your Add /Remove Programs list, close Excel and run the Uninstall File.

30-day Trial Note: Even if you uninstall the 30-day trial you will not be able to re-install it. If you need more time to evaluate the QI Macros, send an e-mail to support@qimacros.com and ask for a 30-day trial extension.

Other Issues or Error Messages

Excel asks for QI Macros Password When Closing

When exiting Excel, it prompts for a password to open the QI Macros code:

Excel Prompts for QI Macros Addin Password

To get rid of the dialogue box, uninstall the QI Macros and run a registry cleaner. Once the cleaner is complete, close Excel and re-install the QI Macros.

However, this may instead be caused by Google Desktop or Acrobat's LoadBehavior. Solution: Start regedit and search for "LoadBehavior".

For Google Desktop, change its registry key (below) to a 2 - Click here for full description.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\Office.Desktop.Google.com\LoadBehavior

You may need to do the same for Acrobat and other instances of LoadBehavior - Click here for full description.

Excel installation files corrupted causing weird behavior

Change LoadBehavior in Registry

Lately I've noticed a number of weird behaviors cropping up in Excel (e.g., Excel's chart menu appears on a worksheet instead of a chart sheet). When we repair Excel, everything (including the QI Macros) starts running better. To repair your installation of Excel:

Excel 2010 Starter Edition

Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 is a simplified version of Excel that does not include all of the features found in the full version of Excel including installation of add-ins, and the ability to read .xla and .xlam files.

These features are required to use the QI Macros. Therefore, the QI Macros will not work with Excel Starter 2010. You will need to purchase a full version of Excel. For further information see Microsofts Excel Starter 2010 webpage.

Excel was Installed Using Click-to-Run

Excel 2010 versions installed using Click-to-Run use a virtual file system which appears as a virtual Q drive. Unfortunately, you cannot access this drive and neither can the QI Macros. If you installed using Click to Run you have two options. If your Excel is running slow you may want to choose options 2 as this should speed up Excel.

  1. Install the QI Macros using the Alternate Startup folder.

There are three steps to this process:

    1. Click on My Computer, the C drive and the QI Macros folder:

If you have an XLSTART folder open it. It should look like this:
    alt-startup-install-files
If you do not have an XLSTART folder, contact us at support@qimacros.com and we can send the folder and its contents to you. Let us know if you purchased the software or are using the 30-day trial.

    2. In Excel, click on File, Options and Advanced to open the window below. Scroll down to the General section and type the QI Macros location (c:\qimacros\xlstart\)in the box labeled "At startup, open all files in:"

    3. Close Excel and reopen it. QI Macros should appear on your Excel toolbar.

If your Excel is running slow, you might want to consider re-installing Excel using the traditional method.
  2. Uninstall the Click to Run version of Excel and obtain the traditional MSI-based installation for Office Home and Student 2010 or Office Home and Business 2010. Then install the QI Macros.

To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Uninstall the Office Click-to-Run version of Office 2010 by using Control Panel.
    2. Visit the site where you purchased Office 2010, and sign in by using your Live ID.
    3. Then, click My Account at the top of the home page to access your Office 2010 downloads.
    4. Click Download for the suite you purchased, and then click Advanced Options under Download Now. A version of Office 2010 is listed that is not an Office Click-to-Run product and that does not require the Q: drive to be available.
    5. After you install this version of Excel 2010 then install the QI Macros.

Gage R&R Template: A formula in this worksheet contains one or more invalid references.

Excel 2010 does not recognize #NA as valid cell contents. QI Macros use this to control the format of GageR&R charts.

This is a known problem in Excel 2010.

Just hit "ok" and ignore the message as there is nothing wrong with the template or its formulas. Once you have hit ok after pressing save, close the Excel file and reopen – you will no longer receive the error message.

I get a Security Warning Every Time I Open Excel

You may have restricted access to addins. Click on "Application add-ins have been disabled" and follow these instructions to make QI Macros a trusted publisher:

Solution: Uninstall Google Desktop.

Repairs to qimacros.xlam. Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content. Visual Basic is not installed.

QI Macros code is written in Visual Basic. When you install the QI Macros and then open Excel, you will receive this error when "Visual Basic for Application" was not installed with MS Office 2007-2010.

In order to fix this issue, you need to install Visual Basic as follows:

  1. Close Excel.
  2. Go into Control Panel on your PC by clicking on "Start" and then Control Panel.

  3. In the Control Panel, choose "Add or Remove Programs" (Programs and Features in Vista).
  4. Select Microsoft Office in the list and click on the Change button.

  5. Another window will open with a list of options, choose "Add or Remove Features."

  6. Open the "Office Shared Features" list by clicking on the "+" next to it. Select "Visual Basic for Applications" and set it to "Run from My Computer." Then click continue.

  7. You will then get a window that shows you the progress of the Configuration Process. This will take a couple of minutes and then you should receive a "Configuration Successful" window. Click Close and then reopen Excel.

Run-time Automation Error

QI Macros could be doing battle with another addin. In one case, it was an old Lotus Notes addin DDocCtrlO.xla and .dll (.com add-in).

Disable other addins to see if the automation error goes away. Go to Options - Addins - Manage Addins and uncheck the other addins.

This software requires 1653KB of space on the ? Drive to install

You have redirected MyDocuments to an external drive (e.g., f:\mysharedocs.
QI Macros are trying to install test data in My Documents, but do not have access to the drive.
In recent versions of the installer, the QI Macros will be installed, but the Test Data will not.
If you start Excel and the QI Macros menu is on the ribbon, it succeeded.
Older versions of the installer will not install anything once it hits this error.

To Install the QI Macros,

  1. Right click on My Documents and choose Properties
    How to Change My Documents
  2. In Properties, click on Location
  3. Copy the external drive location (to restore your linkages)
  4. Change to some place on your c drive (e.g., c:\qimacros)
  5. Save your changes
  6. Install the QI Macros
  7. Restore the external My Documents Location

Consider upgrading to the latest version to get the latest functionality and an updated installer.

When I double click on an Excel file, Excel opens but there is no QI Macros menu

Sometimes Excel gets confused. Try opening Excel Options-Advanced and unchecking the box shown below. Close Excel and then try double clicking on an Excel file.
