QI Macros Technical Support

Most Common Support Questions for Excel 2007

NOTE: Microsoft has stopped supporting this version of Excel as of July 2018, therefore QI Macros is no longer compatible with Excel 2007.

Common Problems & Questions

No QI Macros menu appears
Run Time Error 1004, qimacros.xlam could not be found

QI Macros Menu does not Appear in Excel

This is because your Microsoft security settings has removed the Alternate Startup pathway in Excel, once closed:

Download, Enable and Click on button in this file: Add-QIMacros.xlsm

Manual way to restore QI Macros Addin:

  1. Open Excel and select File > Options > Advanced
  2. In the Advanced section, scroll down to the "General" portion, and in the "At startup, open all files in" textbox, input the following: C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\
  3. Press "OK," close Excel and reopen - you should now see the QI Macros menu in your Excel ribbon.

One of two things has happened:

  1. Excel disabled one of the QI Macros files.
To enable the disabled file (qimacros.xlam, QIMacros2010menu.xlam or QIMacros2007menu.xlam):
    • Click on the Office Button in the top left corner of Excel and Select Excel Options.
    • Then Click on Add-Ins in the left-hand column.
    • Then Click on Manage at the bottom of the screen and select Disabled Items:

    • Then Click on the GO button next to your selection to see all disabled items:
    • disabled excel-addin

    • Click on each of the qi macros disabled items and click Enable.
    • Once you've enabled all of the QI Macros disabled items, exit Excel and then re-open it.
  2. QIMacros.xlam did not get loaded.

Go to C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\ or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Xlstart and view the contents of the XLstart folder, it should look like this:

If your XLStart folder contains some kind of temporary file, delete the temporary file and see if this solves the problem. If your folder is missing the .xlam file, then close Excel and reinstall the QI Macros. If your XLStart folder contains the files, then Excel has disabled them. See step 1 above.
  3.  Note: If the necessary install files are not located in any of the pathways listed above, see if they are perhaps found in the following pathway: c:\ Users\ AppData\ Local\ VirtualStore\ Program Files (x86)\ Microsoft Office\ Office12\ XLSTART

Excel 2007 Service Packs are not loaded

Excel 2007 Service Paks correct many of the bugs that were released in the original version of Excel 2007. Many of these fixes affect Excel's charting capabilities so you will want to ensure that you have them loaded. To date, Microsoft has released three service paks for Excel 2007.

To check your version and update to the latest service pak:

  1. Click on the Office Icon in the top left corner, then Excel Options, then Resources.
  2. The bottom line entitled "About Microsoft Excel 2007" will tell you which service pak you have loaded (should be SP3). To load the latest service paks or to check if you need updates, click on "Check for Updates" in the top line.

Installation Instructions and Troubleshooting

Installation Instructions

  1. Close Excel
  2. Double click on the QI Macros setup.exe file to run the installation wizard.
  3. Answer the prompts
  4. Open Excel, you should see "QI Macros" on your menu bar.

If the installation wizard ran correctly and you don't see QI Macros on your menu bar, Excel may have disabled the file. Its easy to re-enable the file.

  • In Excel, click on File, Options and then on Add-Ins in the left-hand column.
  • Then Click on Manage Excel Add ins at the bottom of the screen and click on the arrow next to the box and select Disabled Items:

  • Then Click on the GO button next to your selection to see all disabled items:

    disabled excel-addin
  • Click on each of the qi macros disabled items and click Enable.
  • Once you've enabled all of the QI Macros disabled items, exit Excel and start Excel 2007. The qimacros.xlam file should open automatically.

If Excel Continues to Disable the file:

  • You may have Macro Security set too high - click on the Office Button > Excel Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Add-ins, and uncheck both boxes.

If the necessary files are located in the proper location:

  • Check to see if Excel removed the "At startup, open all files in" pathway when Excel was closed. To do so, open Excel and select File > Options > Advanced.
  • In the Advanced portion of Excel, scroll down to "General" and look to see if C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\ is inputted in the "At startup, open all files in" section:

  • If this window is blank, input the startup pathway listed above, press OK, close Excel and reopen Excel - you should now see the QI Macros menu in your Excel ribbon.

Test data for the charts is located at C:\Program Files\QIMacros\test data. You can use these spreadsheets or your own data to practice with the charts.

Basically you just select your data, go up to the menu bar and select the chart you want to run. Templates like the FMEA, Gage RR and DOE can be accessed by choosing the Lean Six Sigma Templates from the pull down menu.

Where do I find the QI Macros files on my PC?

QI Macros is loaded in the XLStart folder at C:\Program Files\QIMacros\xlstart\ or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Xlstart. Your XL Start folder should contain the following files:

If you are having problems accessing the menu or templates and your XLStart folder contains some kind of temporary file, delete the temporary file and see if this solves the problem.

Object variable not set (Error 91)

Your QI Macros 2006 or earlier version is not compatible with Excel 2007. You need to purchase a new QI Macros license.

qimacros.xlam is already open, reopening...

There's four possibilities:

I. The XLSTART folder is also in the Excel Options - Advance - At Startup, open all files in...(see below).

If so, clear this field:

XL2007 Alternate Startup is set to XLStart

II. Excel gets confused if it thinks the macros are an add-in and in the xlstart folder.

  1. Click on the Office button and click on Excel Options.
  2. Select Addins and click on the "Go..." button:

  3. Uncheck the QI Macros Addin button:

    Excel addin menu
  4. Close Excel and start it again.

III. Add-ins Trust level is too high.

Go to File-Options-Trust Center and uncheck all three boxes:

Excel Applications Disabled

Or make QI Macros a trusted publisher (Click here).

IV. A registry key, "OPEN", is causing Excel to open the qimacros.xlam file twice.

  1. Start-Run-Regedit
  2. Search for "qimacros.xlam"
  3. If you see a key "OPEN" that is forcing Excel to open the qimacros.xlam, delete it:

Repairs to qimacros.xlam. Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content

QI Macros code is written in Visual Basic. When you install the QI Macros and then open Excel, you will receive this error when "Visual Basic for Application" was not installed with MS Office 2007-2016.

In order to fix this issue, you need to install Visual Basic as follows:

  1. Close Excel
  2. Go into Control Panel on your PC by clicking on "Start" and then Control Panel.

  3. In the Control Panel, choose "Add or Remove Programs" (Programs and Features in Vista).
  4. Select Microsoft Office in the list and click on the Change button.

  5. Another window will open with a list of options, choose "Add or Remove Features."

  6. Open the "Office Shared Features" list by clicking on the "+" next to it. Select "Visual Basic for Applications" and set it to "Run from My Computer." Then click continue.

  7. You will then get a window that shows you the progress of the Configuration Process. This will take a couple of minutes and then you should receive a "Configuration Successful" window. Click Close and then reopen Excel

Running Windows 10 S?

Please note that QI Macros is not compatible with Windows 10 S. If you have this Operating System installed, and want to install QI Macros, you must upgrade to Windows 10 Pro: Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro

To Uninstall a QI Macros License or 30-Day Trial

QI Macros is an Excel add-in and not a separate application. Therefore it does not uninstall using Add/Remove programs. Instead, visit the following link for detailed instructions.

30-Day Trial Note: If you uninstall the 30-day trial, you will not be able to re-install it! If you need more time to evaluate the QI Macros, send an e-mail to support@qimacros.com and ask for a 15-day trial extension.

Problems When Running a Macro

Macro does not run - nothing happens

Your macro security settings may be too high. Click on the Office Button and Excel Options (bottom):

Then click on Trust Center Settings (bottom right):

Excel 2007-2010 defaults to disabling all macros with notification. So to get the macros to run, set macro security to Enable All Macros:

Missing X Axis Date Labels

This appears to be an Excel 2007 bug.

To show all dates, right click on the axis and choose Format Axis. Then check the Date Axis checkbox.

R Chart lines all start at zero

While Excel 97-2003 all default to showing blank cells as "gaps" in charts, some (but not all) versions of XL2007 show blanks as zeros, which causes all lines to start at zero:

  1. While I have not been able to figure out how to change Excel 2007's default, here's what to do to correct the graph. Click on Chart-Design-Select Data:

  2. Click on Hidden and Empty Cells button at the bottom of the menu:

  3. You should see that Excel is defaulting to showing empty cells as zero, not gaps. Click on Gaps button and then OK:

  4. Excel will hide the blanks and correct the chart:

X Charts - cannot show Ghost point, process change, delete point, etc.

On the sheet where the X and R charts are embedded together, Excel 2007 does not "trap" the clicking of a point. This is an Excel 2007 bug that has not been fixed in any of the service paks.(The problem does not exist in other versions of Excel).

To work around this issue for show process change, ghost point and delete point, click on the X chart or R Chart sheets and make your changes there. They will be reflected on the embedded charts.

To add text to a point, right click on the point and select Data Label. It will populate a text box with the data value. You can edit this box and change its contents.

No Chart or Empty Chart

If you get a blank chart (see below), it is probably a printer issue:

To Fix This Problem, Click on Print Preview. You should get this message indicating that your printer is not set up. If so, set up the printer or choose another printer:

The chart should appear or you may need to rerun the chart.

This seems to occur when running more than one version of Excel (e.g., 2013 and 2007).

Problems When Opening a Template

Gage R&R Template: A formula in this worksheet contains one or more invalid references.

Excel 2007 does not recognize #NA as valid cell contents. QI Macros use this to control the format of GageR&R charts.

This is a known problem in Excel 2007: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931389

Just hit "ok" and ignore the message as there is nothing wrong with the template or its formulas. Once you have hit ok after pressing save, close the Excel file and reopen – you will no longer receive the error message.

XmR Dashboard:
Circular Reference after Ghosting a point or showing a process change.

Chart Menu items mistake "Average" in cell X1 on the chart sheets as being a Range Chart, not part of the Histogram. (First noticed in June of 2010)

Open c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\xlstart\QITemplates\XmRDashboard.xlt

Change cell X1 in XmR Average and XmR Median sheets to "AveMean". Save the templates.

Excel 2007 Issues with Fixes

Excel Formula Bar Flickers

Delete the contents of "c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\excel" and reboot the computer. The folder contents will be re-created the next time you open Excel. The problem should not return.

Excel 2007 slow to start up

There's 2 possibilities:

1.) Delete the contents of "c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\excel" and restart Excel.

Also delete c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\xlstart\PDFMaker.xla (the Adobe Acrobat addin which works for XL2003 and earlier).

2.) Symantec Endpoint Protection (virus scan) is scanning qimacros.xlam and menu.xlam every time Excel opens.

Excude xlstart folders from being scanned, and add Symantec Endpoint Protection exemption for .xl_ files (e.g. qimacros.xlam).

Excel 2007 crashes when data entered (Vista)

Sometimes old addins from prior versions of Excel can cause problems for Excel 2007.

Click on Excel Options - Addins and uncheck anything other than the Analysis Toolpak. In the example below, we unchecked LinkedIn Outlook Toolbar and Lookup Wizard and Excel 2007 started working again.

Excel installation files corrupted causing weird behavior

Lately I've noticed a number of weird behaviors cropping up in Excel 2007 (e.g., Excel's chart menu appears on a worksheet instead of a chart sheet). When we repair Excel, everything (including the QI Macros) starts running better. To repair your installation of Excel:

Click on Options-Resources-Diagnose. You may need your installation CD to complete this process.

QI Macros is an Excel add-in. Therefore, many of the error messages you may receive are Excel error messages caused by your Excel configuration or security settings. Always make sure you have the latest service pack loaded.

We have included the most common errors here. If you can't find the error message and fix you are looking for:

  • make sure you have the most recent Excel Service Pack loaded
  • search Microsoft's Support page or
