I love the Control Chart Wizard.” He said, “And it’s so easy to teach. You know, I have the residents and internists just select data with the mouse, click a button, get a chart… select data, click a button, get a chart… the Control Chart Wizard will pick it automatically. They don’t need to know a lot of stuff. I can teach it in nanoseconds.” Well, that’s a good story right there.

“Now, then later another attendee came up and said, “I love QI Macros… but I have trouble teaching nurses and staff because I’m trying to explain to them what an average is and how you calculate the control limits.” And I said, “Stop. Why are you doing that? They don’t need to know that.” They don’t need to know how you calculate limits and center lines and all that stuff. All they need to know is: Is the process stable? Is it going unstable… right? Is it trending one way or another? That’s all they need to know. What does the chart tell you?

“Stop teaching people statistics. They don’t need to know statistics to do this. They just need software like QI Macros that’ll automate all of that stuff for you, and then they can look at the chart and it’ll tell them something they need to know about how things are performing.

“That’s my Improvement Insight for this week. Let’s stop teaching people things they don’t need to know to solve problems they don’t have to impress people they don’t like. Let’s go out and improve something this week.”

Several QI Macros users came up to me at the IHI Conference and said: “QI Macros is Easy To Teach!” That’s when I realized I’ve always been chasing that dream.
