Over time, extra tubes dropped to only 84 per day, a 74% reduction. This savings did not include the cost of disposal of &#8220;red bag&#8221; waste which would increase the savings. The hospital used Control Charts to monitor and sustain the improvement:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qimacros.com\/lean-six-sigma-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustain-phase.jpg\" alt=\"sustain phase\" width=\"583\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qimacros.com\/lean-six-sigma-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustain-phase.jpg 583w, https:\/\/www.qimacros.com\/lean-six-sigma-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustain-phase-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.qimacros.com\/lean-six-sigma-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustain-phase-115x91.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This also helps reduce hospital-acquired anemia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a great improvement story told with control charts and Pareto charts.\u00a0<\/strong>The root cause was simple.<\/p>\n<p>What if every hospital in the U.S. did this sort of analysis to reduce waste? Wouldn&#8217;t it help achieve the Trillion Dollar Checkbook goal?<\/p>\n<p>For future investigation: Of the 7% used for additional analysis, what were the presenting symptoms and types of patients who needed additional blood work? Is there a way to pinpoint who needs an additional tube and who doesn&#8217;t?
