Behavior Charts? Or Performance Charts?"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Shewhart didn&#8217;t make our lives any easier 100 years ago when he started using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qimacros.com\/control-chart\/\">control charts<\/a>. Now, he was most interested in economic control of quality of manufactured product, and he called the charts that he used for that \u201ccontrol charts.\u201d I don\u2019t know about you, but for most people when you hear the word control, they don\u2019t like the idea of being controlled. \u201cControl\u201d just sounds bad, doesn\u2019t it? And then Dr. Donald Wheeler has started to call them \u201cprocess behavior charts\u201d and trying to shift that nomenclature, but I think that term is kind of long and it doesn\u2019t really give us much incentive \u2013 it\u2019s not motivational.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;So I\u2019d like you, if you start talking to your leadership team, to call control charts what they are: They are \u201cperformance charts.\u201d Does anybody you know want to improve their control? Well, maybe in their golf swing or their tennis serve. (What they want is better control of their serve) But overall they want to improve their performance. Once you tell people that there\u2019s a performance chart, everybody wants to improve their performance. If you\u2019re trying to introduce this to other people maybe the safe way to go about it \u2013 the easy way to go about it \u2013 is just to call it a performance chart, not a control chart, not a process behavior chart\u2026 a performance chart.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s my Improvement Insight for this week.\u201d<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shewhart didn&rsquo;t make our lives any easier 100 years ago when he started using control charts.
