Track the time for your process steps.To understand cycle time, you have to be able to measure and improve the key steps in your process. To simplify and automate much of this data collection and analysis, I've created a series of time tracking tools in Microsoft Excel. And I've integrated them with the QI Macros control chart and pareto chart templates to give you automatic graphs of LOS performance. A one-step time tracking tool, for instance looks like this:
To simplify data entry we've built shortcut keys and macros to help you input date and time data. Just click on a blank date, start, or end time cell, and the macros will automatically input the current date or time. If the date/time is earlier than a previous step, the cell will turn reddish-orange indicating that you have a data entry error. The cell will also turn reddish-orange if you have an empty cell to complete before your data is ready for analysis. These individual records are then summarized and presented as charts of key times:
