Excel 2010 Starter Edition

Installation Instructions and Troubleshooting

Installation Instructions

Where the QI Macros Files are installed on my PC?

To Uninstall a QI Macros License or 30-Day Trial

The QI Macros is an Excel add-in and not a separate application. Therefore it does not uninstall using Add/Remove programs. Instead follow the instructions below:

30 Day Trial Note: Even if you uninstall the 30 day trial you will not be able to re-install it. If you need more time to evaluate the QI Macros, send an email to support@qimacros.com and ask for a 30 day trial extension.

Other Issues or Error Messages

The QI Macros is an Excel add-in. Therefore, many of the error messages you may receive are Excel error messages caused by your Excel configuration or security settings. Always make sure you have the latest service pak loaded.

We have included the most common errors here. If you can't find the error message and fix you are looking for:

  • make sure you have the most recent Excel Service Pak loaded.
  • search Microsoft's Support page or
  • contact us via email at support@qimacros.com or phone

Installation Instructions

  1. Close Excel
  2. Double click on the QI Macros setup.exe file to run the installation wizard.
  3. Answer the prompts
  4. Open Excel, you should see "QI Macros" on your menu bar.

If the installation wizard ran correctly and you don't see QI Macros on your menu bar, Excel may have disabled the file. Its easy to re-enable the file. Click here for instructions to re-enable the files.

Test data for the charts is located at c/qimacros/test data. You can use these spreadsheets or your own data to practice with the charts.

Basically you just select your data, go up to the menu bar and select the chart you want to run. Templates like the FMEA, Gage RR and DOE can be accessed by choosing the Fill-in-the-blanks Templates from the pull down menu.

Where do I find the QI Macros Files on My PC?

The QI Macros is loaded in the XLStart folder at c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Xlstart. Yyour XL Start folder should contain the following files.

If you are having problems accessing the menu or templates and your XLStart folder contains some kind of temporary file, delete the temporary file and see if this solves the problem.

No QI Macros on my Excel menu or

Run Time Error 1004: QIMacros.xla could not be found

One of three things has happened:

  1. Excel disabled the QI Macros
  2. Excel was installed using Click to Run and additional manual steps are required to complete the installation.
  3. QIMacros.xla did not get installed properly.
  1. Excel disabled the QI Macros
To re-enable either the qimacros.xla or QIMacros2010menu.xlam files
    • In Excel, click on File, Options and then on Add-Ins in the left-hand column.
    • Then Click on Manage Excel Add ins at the bottom of the screen and click on the arrow next to the box and select Disabled Items:

    • Then Click on the GO button next to your selection to see all disabled items:

    • Click on each of the qi macros disabled items and click Enable.

    • Once you've enabled all of the QIMacros disabled items, exit Excel and start Excel 2010. The qimacros.xla file should open automatically.

  2. Excel was installed using Click to Run and additional manual steps are required to complete the installation.

Excel 2010 versions installed using Click-to-Run use a virtual file system which appears as a virtual Q drive. Unfortunately, you cannot access this drive and neither can the QI Macros. Therefore, the QI Macros need to be installed using an Alternate Startup Folder.

There are three steps to this process:

    1. Click on My Computer, the C drive and the QI Macros folder:

If you have an XLSTART folder open it. It should look like this:

If the QIMacros2010menu file is missing, it is loaded in the QI Templates folder. Open the QI Templates folder and move the QIMacros2010menu file into the XLSTART folder.

If you do not have an XLSTART folder, contact us at support@qimacros.com and we can send the folder and its contents to you. Let us know if you purchased the software or are using the 30 day trial.

    2. In Excel, click on File, Options and Advanced to open the window below. Scroll down to the General section and type the QI Macros location (c:\qimacros\xlstart\)in the box labeled "At startup, open all files in:"

    3. Close Excel and reopen it. The QI Macros should appear on your Excel toolbar.

If your Excel is running slow, you might want to consider re-installing Excel using the traditional method.

  3. QIMacros.xla did not get loaded.

Go to c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Xlstart and view the contents of the XLstart folder, it should look like this:

If your XLStart folder contains some kind of temporary file, delete the temporary file and see if this solves the problem. If your folder is missing the .xla file, then close Excel and reinstall the QI Macros. If your XLStart folder contains the files, then Excel has disabled them. See step 1 above.

To Uninstall the QI Macros

Uninstall using the uninstall file: Close Excel and click here to run the uninstall file

Uninstall manually by removing the qimacros.xla and QIMacros2010menu.xlam files in: c:\program files\microsoft office\office14\xlstart

Note: In Windows 7 with 32 bit versions of Excel (all versions except 2010) you will find the files in Program Files x86 vs Program Files

Uninstalling the 30-Day trial:

If you uninstall the 30-day trial, you will not be able to reinstall it again. If you need more time to evaluate the software, send an email to support@qimacros.com and ask for an extension.

QI Macros still shows up under Add /Remove Programs after I uninstall manually:

The QI Macros has been uninstalled. If you want to remove it from your Add /Remove Programs list, close Excel and run the Uninstall File

Excel installation files corrupted causing weird behavior

Lately I've noticed a number of weird behaviors cropping up in Excel (e.g., Excel's chart menu appears on a worksheet instead of a chart sheet). When we repair Excel, everything (including the QI Macros) starts running better. To repair your installation of Excel:

Start - Control Panel - Microsoft Office 2010 - Change - Repair

Macro Does Not Run - Nothing Happens (XL 2007-2010)

Your macro security settings may be too high. Click on the Office Button and Excel Options (bottom):

Then click on Trust Center Settings (bottom right):

Excel 2007-2010 defaults to disabling all macros with notification. So to get the macros to run, set macro security to Enable All Macros:

Repairs to qimacros.xla. Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content.

QI Macros code is written in Visual Basic. When you install the QI Macros and then open Excel, you will receive this error when "Visual Basic for Application" was not installed with MS Office 2007-2010.

In order to fix this issue, you need to install Visual Basic as follows:

  1. Close Excel
  2. Go into Control Panel on your PC by clicking on "Start" and then Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel, choose "Add or Remove Programs" (Programs and Features in Vista).
  4. Select Microsoft Office in the list and click on the Change button.
  5. Another window will open with a list of options, choose "Add or Remove Features."
  6. Open the "Office Shared Features" list by clicking on the "+" next to it. Select "Visual Basic for Applications" and set it to "Run from My Computer." Then click continue.
  7. You will then get a window that shows you the progress of the Configuration Process. This will take a couple of minutes and then you should receive a "Configuration Successful" window. Click Close and then reopen Excel.

Excel 2010 Installed Using Click to Run

Excel 2010 versions installed using Click-to-Run use a virtual file system which appears as a virtual Q drive. Unfortunately, you cannot access this drive and neither can the QI Macros. If you installed using Click to Run you have two options. If your Excel is running slow you may want to choose options 2 as this should speed up Excel.

1. Install the QI Macros using the Alternate Startup folder.

2. Uninstall the Click to Run version of Excel and obtain the traditional MSI-based installation for Office Home and Student 2010 or Office Home and Business 2010. Then install the QI Macros.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall the Office Click-to-Run version of Office 2010 by using Control Panel.
  2. Visit the site where you purchased Office 2010, and sign in by using your Live ID.
  3. Then, click My Account at the top of the home page to access your Office 2010 downloads.
  4. Click Download for the suite you purchased, and then click Advanced Options under Download Now. A version of Office 2010 is listed that is not an Office Click-to-Run product and that does not require the Q: drive to be available.
  5. After you install this version of Excel 2010 then install the QI Macros.

Click-2-Run: To Activate Expired QI Macros Demo:

  1. Purchase the QI Macros
  2. Call us to get the activation code at 888 468 1537 or 303 756 9144 (have your invoice # ready)
  3. Click on Addins-QI Macros-Order the QI Macros:

  4. Type in the Passcode where shown:

Excel Starter 2010 Edition:

Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 is a simplified version of Excel that does not include all of the features found in the full version of Excel including installation of add-ins, and the ability to read .xla and .xlam files.

These features are required to use the QI Macros. Therefore, the QI Macros will not work with Excel Starter 2010. You will need to purchase a full version of Excel. For further information see Microsofts Excel Starter 2010 webpage.
