Many situations call for sampling from a larger population and drawing inferences from the sample. But how big of a sample size do you need? There's two different requirements for sample sizes:
The QI Macros for Excel contains a sample size calculator. Just select Anova and Analysis Tools then Sample Size. A sample size input window or template will open. QI Macros 2006 and earlier versions:

As you can see, it's not that hard to calculate the minimum sample size required to determine the mean from a sample of attribute data or the percent "good/bad" from a larger population. There are more exotic calculations when you get into gathering samples
