The purpose of a Value Stream Map is to analyze value-added and nonvalue added activities and delays.

Use a Value Stream Map to define the existing or improved value stream as a starting point for removing non-value added delay and activities.

Here is an example of a Value Stream Map included in the QI Macros for Excel.

To create a Value Stream Map:

1. Start with high level process steps.
2. Identify delays between steps and inventory levels.
3. Use Post-it™ notes to lay out activities, arrows and work in process.
