Comparing Pareto Charts

Process improvement and Six Sigma require proof that an improvement actually changed performance. If part of the analysis involved a pareto chart or two, the verification of root causes and improvements should also contain a pareto chart.

Essentially, the improvement story should reflect before and after paretos:

How to compare pareto charts to show process improvement

Simply hang onto the original pareto chart for comparison. After root cause analysis and implementation, redraw the pareto chart using the new performance data. The "big bar" on the pareto chart should have moved further right (i.e., gotten smaller or been eliminated all together). There should be a new "big bar."

In the QI Macros, if you copy and paste the old and the new pareto charts onto a single sheet, you can compress the scale of the second chart to show the change and change the color of the bars.
