Gantt charts are used to pictorially show the status of project plan tasks and phases. A gantt chart uses bars to show the start and end date of each task and each task in relation to the others.

Here is an example of a Gantt Chart in Excel created using the QI Macros for Excel SPC software.

To create a Gantt Chart

1. Identify major project milestones or phases
2. Identify the tasks under each milestone.
3. Determine the number of hours required to complete each task and the task start and end dates.
4. Input the information into the Gantt chart template.
   • Input data into the yellow shaded areas.
   • Copy and paste rows to add project phases and tasks.
5. Update the formulas in the rows representing project phases to match the tasks for that phase.
