Ever noticed that it's easy to get motivated when you feel passionate about a subject or a project?

Many people who struggle in jobs or relationships are doing what they think they should be doing, but not what their heart wants them to do. In the DNA of Success, author Jack Zufelt maintains that we can only get motivated when focused on our core values.

The way to discover your core values is by asking questions.

To discover your core values, pick an area of your life (relationships, financial, location, etc.) and just ask:

1. What do you want?
2. What will that do for you that's even more important? (Wait for an answer.)
3. What will having that do for you that's even more important? (Keep asking until the person's eyes "light up." When they do, you've found a core value.)

Zufelt uses a slightly different question to get to core values. Zufelt would ask:

1. What do you want?
2. What will that get for you that you don't already have?
3. And what will that get you that you don't already have? (Wait for an answer. Keep asking until the person's eyes "light up.")

The KnowWare version is great for Achievers, while Zufelt's version is great for Problem Solvers. When I tried it myself, I actually had an easier time answering his question. I suspect that Problem Solvers will have an easier time answering this question as well.
