JCAHO is currently developing a new set of measures for Hospital Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services.

Most executive teams prefer to see measures presented in a consistent manner such as:

  • Scorecards that highlight potential problem areas.
  • Charts that show performance over time.

Our HBIPS Scorecard and Dashboard is designed to provide both with a fill-in-the blanks approach. All you have to do is:

  1. Describe your measures (we've done most of this for you)
    • The name of the measure
    • The numerator/denominator used to calculate it
    • A definition of the numerator and denominator and how each is collected.
  2. Set the targets and thresholds for color coding results
  3. Input your data The HBIPS Scorecard and Dashboard will do the rest.

Describe Your Measures
Using the HBIPS Specifications Manual, we have already described the measures for you. There are 5 different measures. Each measure is gathered for 5 sets of patient populations for a total of 25 measures.

Measures

  1. Assessment of violence risk, substance use disorder, trauma and patient
    strengths completed within 72 hours.
  2. Hours of restraint
  3. Hours of seclusion
  4. Patients discharged on multiple antipsychotic medications with incomplete aftercare documentation
  5. Discharge assessment and aftercare recommendations are sent to next
level of care providers upon discharge

Patient Populations

  1. All
  2. Children 1-0 years
  3. Adolescents 10-17 years
  4. Adults 18-64 years
  5. Geriatric > 65 years

If you wish to change the wording you can do so in the describe your measures template.

Here's what the describe your measures template looks like:

Data Entry Sheet
You can then start entering data into the data entry sheet. It has space for up to 24 months, 24 weeks, 24 days, or whatever time period you desire.

These values are automatically converted to measures and shown on the scorecards and dashboard charts.

Color Coded Scorecards visually report the status of your metrics.

Again in the "Describe Your Measures" sheet, enter the target or goal for each measure and indicate the thresholds for yellow, red or even purple (good).

These thresholds are used to display the good, bad and the ugly on your scorecards (example of a HBIPS scorecard is shown below). The yellow and red (bad and ugly) enables immediate action by the leadership team.

Control Charts
For better analysis of process performance, the system creates XmR control charts of your data automatically from the scorecard.
