Good News

First, I want to let you know that the price of the QI Macros isn't going up in 2008. Not one penny. That means that you can still get the easiest Excel-based SPC software for an affordable $139 or less. That's less than any of our competitors and far less than Minitab.

Special Offer for Your Friends!

We created a special 90 day QI Macros trial for you to share with your friends. If you know anyone who would like to try the QI Macros please provide them with this link http://www.qimacros.com/jan2008special.html. They will get to try the QI Macros risk free for 90 days.

NOTE: This link will be available through March 31, 2008. If you have already loaded the 30 day trial on a PC you cannot load the 90 day trial over it.

Tell Us What You Want

We're going to be adding lots of functionality to the QI Macros in 2008. If there's something you want to see added to the QI Macros this year, send me:

  • a bullet list of desired functionality
  • a reference (website, copy of book page, etc) that describes the item and any supporting formulas.

Email your lists to: knowwareman@mindspring.com with a Subject line: "QI Macros Enhancements".

Based on your feedback we'll prioritize the lists and get started on it.

I Need Your Help!

When we attend trade shows, QI Macros users come to our booth just to meet us and tell us how much they love the software. Many say: "I use it every day." Lately, however, I've heard something disturbing.

Yesterday, a user called me from Ireland. He said:

"My company bought Minitab, but I bought the QI Macros."

When I asked him why he liked the QI Macros over Minitab, he answered as most users do:

  • The QI Macros are more intuitive and simple to use.
  • You don't have to be a statistician to use the QI Macros.
  • Minitab's learning curve is too steep. Nobody uses it because they don't know or can't remember how to use it.
  • Minitab is overkill for most projects
  • My data's already in Excel. Copying it into Minitab takes time.
  • The QI Macros charts produced in Excel are clearer and more detailed.
  • and so on.

Why are IT departments across America and around the world making expensive decisions that steepen the learning curve and delay or halt improvement efforts? Because they're not listening to their customers: you!

Why does this bother me? Sure I'm losing sales and I like the money, but the real reason is much simpler:

  • Yesterday my favorite restaurant delivered my breakfast burrito smothered in cheese when I specifically asked for "no cheese". The rest of my breakfast got cold while they remade it.
  • The day before that, my wife thought she was buying a Powerball quick pick. She got four winning numbers, but on a game called "Cash Five".
  • The day before that my mother, who just turned 84 complained that Humana had lost her Medicare prescription records. She'd called three times to get it correct and each time they said: "We'll take care of it" but didn't.
  • I've talked to people working in companies that failed to buy and use even simple SPC charts. One company melted a $100 million steel furnace because they didn't monitor the temperature. Many hospitals fail to monitor things like surgical site infections and ventilator assisted pneumonia to detect and change trends.

The epidemic of quality problems in this country is costing money, time and lives that could be used in service of the public good. Rework and scrap devour precious resources and contribute to global warming.

The methods and tools are out there to use facts and figures to find and fix the mission critical performance and quality problems that plague any business. Why aren't they using them?

We were at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's conference in December and Quality Expo earlier in the fall. I'm still amazed by the number of people who have no idea that the QI Macros for Excel can easily do all of the charts and documentation required.

At tradeshows I say: "Control Charts in Excel" and people looking the opposite way will literally turn around and say: "I need that." People walking by will get half way down the aisle and come back to find out more. They ask: "How long have you been in business?" Eleven years, I say. They are stunned.

So Here's My Request: Help me sell America and the world on using the tools of quality to make the world a better, "greener" place with less delay, defects, deviation, lost profit and lost lives.

To do Lean doesn't require many tools, but to do Six Sigma projects and sustain the improvement, you need tools. And the QI Macros are ideal for the typical user.

Most companies spend $100 or more per employee to buy office supplies and break room supplies, but they won't spend $50-$100 to give everyone software to find and fix profit-eating, customer-angering problems. Seems silly to me.

Also, many quality professionals complain that they have become the charting and graphing engine of their company. They never have time to do improvement work. Root cause: they are the only ones with SPC software. Solution: Give the QI Macros to EVERYONE. Teach them to draw their own charts and use the tools. The learning curve is almost non-existent.

We can help you get the word out:

Thanks again for choosing the QI Macros and keep up the great improvement work in 2008.
