Accelerate Patient Throughput and Reduce Length of Stay using our LOS Time Tracking SystemAccording to the JCAHO, two thirds of hospitals experience ED diversion.
While divert can be caused by lack of ED nursing staff or ED doctors, lack of beds is a significant cause. Hospitals also transfer patients to other hospitals because of bed shortages. To reduce bed shortages, you have to accelerate patient throughput. And, according to the new JCAHO standard, LD.3.15, every hospital will need a plan to improve patient throughput starting in 2006. To accelerate patient throughput, you have to be able to measure and improve the key steps in length of stay (LOS). More advanced paperless medical records systems will track much of this for you. If your system doesn't do this, you can't wait for the next big IT conversion. To simplify and automate much of this data collection and analysis, I've created a series of time tracking tools in Microsoft Excel. And I've integrated them with the QI Macros control chart and pareto chart templates to give you automatic graphs of LOS performance. The ED log, for instance looks like this:

If the date/time is earlier than a previous step, the cell will turn reddish-orange indicating that you have a data entry error (see Triage-before-Sign-in example above. The cell will also turn reddish-orange if you have an empty cell to complete before your data is ready for analysis. These individual records are then summarized and presented as charts of key times:
